Is your California filing status different from your federal filing status?
Filing Status Information California requires the same filing status used on the federal return. Exceptions: A taxpayer who is an RDP, and who files single for federal tax purposes must file married/RDP filing jointly or married/RDP filing separately for California purposes.
What is RDP filing status?
If you’re married/Registered Domestic Partner (RDP), you may choose to file separately. Each spouse or partner will prepare a separate tax return and report their individual income and deductions. Tax rates are higher for the married/RDP filing separately filing status.
Does state filing status have to match federal?
The program will not exclude the income from the other spouse on the state return. The exception to this is in those circumstances where the state allows for the filing status of Married Filing Separately on a combined return.
What is my federal filing status?
Your filing status, along with your income, helps determine your tax liability. Single, head of household, married filing separately, married filing jointly, and qualifying widow(er) are the five filing statuses.
Is spouse a CA nonresident?
California is a community property state. If one spouse is a resident of California and the other is a nonresident, then the California: Resident may be required to report income earned outside of California. Nonresident may be required to report income earned by the resident spouse.
Can RDP file MFJ?
You may file married/Registered Domestic Partner (RDP) filing jointly if at the end of the year: You were married or an RDP. You and your spouse/RDP lived apart but were not legally separated. Your spouse/RDP passed away during the year and you have not remarried or entered into another registered domestic partnership.
Can a rdp file a federal tax return in California?

What happens to my taxes if my RDP passes away?
If an RDP passes away within the tax year, the surviving RDP can file a married filing joint return for more information. Withholding is money taken from your earnings (withholding is also done from other forms of income) for state and federal income taxes.
